Your book,
read aloud.
Upload a PDF, EPUB or plain text and listen. Ten studio voices, 31 languages — and everything runs on your device.
No account. No cloud. No cost.
What Booxnet does
No subscription with a reading quota. The speech runs locally — which is why it is unlimited.
PDF, EPUB, text
Pick a file or paste text. The content is read straight in the browser — nothing is uploaded.
Ten studio voices
Male and female, in studio quality at 44.1 kHz. Every voice speaks all 31 languages.
31 languages
The language of the book is detected automatically and can be changed by hand at any time.
Nothing leaves your device
No server sees your books, because none is involved. The speech is computed locally too.
Works offline
Once set up, everything works on a plane, on a train and out of signal range.
Follow along and jump
The sentence being read is highlighted. Tap to jump there, speed 0.5× to 2×, your position is remembered.
Three steps
The first time, the speech package downloads once. After that it starts right away.
Add a book
Choose a PDF, EPUB or text file — or paste text from the clipboard.
Pick a voice
Ten voices to preview. Each introduces itself so you can compare them.
Listen
Press play. The text follows along, your position is remembered, you set the pace.
When Booxnet comes in
Not instead of reading — for the moments when reading isn't possible.
On the way
Bus, train, walking. Twenty minutes of commuting are twenty minutes of book.
While doing something else
Cooking, tidying up, walking. Your hands are busy, your ears are not.
When your eyes are tired
After a long day at a screen, in poor light, or simply with your eyes closed.
Privacy here is not a setting
Most read-aloud services send your text to a server that turns it into speech. Booxnet does not: the entire synthesis runs in the browser on your device. That is why there is no file to upload, no account to create, and no usage that could be billed.
Common questions
What does Booxnet cost?
Nothing. Because the speech is computed on your device, there is no running cost per page read aloud — so there is nothing to bill.
Why does something download on first start?
The voices need a speech model of about 400 MB. It downloads once and stays on the device. Best over Wi-Fi with the app open.
Are my books uploaded?
No. The file is read in the browser and stored in your device's local library. It never leaves it.
Does it work without internet?
Yes, after the one-time download. Booxnet can be added to the home screen and then runs like an app.
Which files can I use?
PDF, EPUB and text files. Scanned PDFs without a text layer contain no readable text — Booxnet cannot read those aloud, because it has no text recognition.
Which languages are spoken?
31, among them English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Arabic. Every voice speaks all of them.
